Hyperthermia

What is Hyperthermia Therapy?

In cancer treatment, it is also known as thermal therapy, thermal ablation, or thermotherapy. Hyperthermia is a treatment that exposes the body tissue to high temperatures (up to 42ËšC).

Several results have shown that elevated temperature can damage and kill cancer cells with minimal or no harm to normal tissue. By killing cancer cells and destructing proteins and the structure within cells, Hyperthermia may help to shrink tumours.

In Hyperthermia, the heat increases blood flow to the tumour, which does 3 things to the patient’s body.

Hyperthermia: It induces your own body’s immune system to attack the cancer

Hyperthermia + Chemotherapy: It increases the blood flow, which brings chemotherapy inside the tumour, allowing better access to chemotherapy in the tumour

Hyperthermia + Radiotherapy: It brings oxygen that helps radiation therapy work better, which improves the complete response rate.

Hyperthermia is nearly often used in conjunction with other cancer treatments, such as radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy - making it a well-known method of killing cancer cells and a vital treatment modality in the treatment of cancer, especially when its results are strongly supported by the criteria of evidence based medicine. Hyperthermia is necessary to treat advanced or high-risk tumours or to retreat a relapse in a pre-irradiated area.
